Essential Oil as IBS Treatment

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a disease that affects one in seven Americans. I find that number to be shocking! Its symptoms are characterized by abdominal pain/discomfort and altered bowel habits like constipation, diarrhea, or altered periods of both. For many people, it’s a chronic disease that truly takes away from their quality of life. Many of its cases go unreported and doctors underestimate the impact that IBS can have on someone.

The first step in getting help for IBS is finding a doctor who will acknowledge the reality of the situation. Unfortunately, there’s no real cure for IBS and its treatments are rather… hard to swallow. Pharmaceutical companies offer drugs to treat the symptoms of IBS, but all of them can cause the very symptoms you’re trying to alleviate, as well as confusion and risk of falls, and cost up to $3,000 per year. So, none of that is good. Sometimes anti-depressants are offered to sufferers of IBS but they can take months to start working and they have reports of sexual dysfunction in 70% of its takers. Is that really the best they can do?

But there are other ways.

There is a simple, effective, low-risk, natural way to help with the terrible symptoms of IBS….

Peppermint is a natural anti-nausea medicine and has been used for thousands of years. The high concentration of peppermint in essential oil form is potent enough to alleviate many of the symptoms of IBS. Any adverse affects of peppermint oil include a peppermint taste in the mouth or a cool sensation when going to the bathroom. In fact, it has proven so effective that doctors are calling for it to be the first line of medication when people have IBS symptoms. Even Western doctors are being urged to use it before prescribing any pharmaceutical drugs.
