I’m so excited to have my new book available to spread the good news about healing the body of disease with a live plant based diet. It includes protocols, recipes and tons of education on why this is the most healing diet and what we are designed for.
Core Concept 1: Understand Cancer By Understanding Disease
One of the most important concepts I have learned during my journey is simply called The Seven Stages of Disease. This is a fascinating Naturopathic concept that offers us the ability to “hear” what our body needs. According to this concept, there is only one disease. When we break that word down and say it in syllables, Dis-ease, that’s really what it’s all about, the lack of ease in the body. This is a clue!
Our body sends us signals all the time. I’m not sure about other places in the world, but in America we are taught to ignore and control the things that aren’t convenient, to just pop a pill and, whatever the “it” is, will go away. What we are really doing, by following this quick fix action, is blocking our sensitivity to hearing what our body needs. We just create a “band-aide effect” over the problem so we don’t feel it or have to be aware of it anymore. This is not a solution but a temporary fix. This is a dangerous action that allows more problems to build. I will explain in more detail throughout this book.
Our bodies only want to do one thing and that is to live, to thrive in harmony with nature. It has developed an intricate feedback system that relies on homeostasis to achieve this one goal. When we listen to and provide our bodies with what it needs in abundance, we thrive. When we ignore our bodies, haphazardly consuming whatever “they” tell us to on the commercials, eat only for pleasure, and take in only minimal nutrients by consuming processed foods, we miss these vital signals of imbalance and our bodies go into survival mode. There isn’t enough energy left over to pursue our dreams, spiritual connection, or even connection with other people, neighbors, and family. Our body has to use all available resources to try to digest, assimilate, protect us, and eliminate that which can’t be used. That doesn’t leave much for thriving.
Understanding some basic functions of our body is important. Education is vital for health. The ancient philosopher, Paracelsus, once said, “The man who is not his own physician by 40 is a fool.” Even in ancient times they understood that one must develop an understanding of their own body to maintain a healthy balance. Because “The Ancients” followed the laws of nature they actually had a better grasp of healing and the capabilities of our body. That knowledge was lost during “The Dark Ages.” In our modern times, we are taught to rely on doctors for this task and, when you think about it, this just isn’t logical. How can anyone know what you are feeling but you? Granted there are many general symptoms we feel that others feel as well, which can help us develop this understanding of ourselves quicker.
Disease, especially cancer, does not just sneaks up on people and strikes them down. It doesn’t happen that way. It takes a long time and a great deal of neglect and abuse for cancer to finally occur. From the first stage of disease to the seventh, cancer, we can be talking about many years. At any step, you can stop its progress. By being aware of these stages and their warning signals, you can put yourself in the position of knowing where you stand in terms of your health so that you can take charge and take control of the situation.
If we are feeling out of sorts, applying the seven stages of disease can help us tell where we are in the disease process. Better yet, understanding the 7 Stages of Disease can guide us in the prevention of entering into dis-ease to begin with. Prevention is not a popular word in conventional medicine because it does not equal profit. A simple example of this is, if we don’t get enough sleep we enter into the first stage of disease.
The stages are as follows:
Stage 1: Enervation (lack of sleep or adequate rest)
Stage 2: Toxemia (excessive toxins)
Stage 3: Irritation (constant toxic exposure to the same area)
Stage 4: Inflammation (swelling in over-irritated areas)
Stage 5: Ulceration (holes to drain excessive toxins)
Stage 6: Induration (tumor formation)
Stage 7: Cancer (anaerobic cell formation)
The Psychology of Disease and Drive for Homeostasis
Disease is not something we catch but something we do to ourselves. Something we’ve done on a continual basis that has thrown our body out of balance, out of homeostasis, and so symptoms present themselves. In America we are taught that these symptoms are individual diseases that need individual pharmaceutical drugs to “cure” and, what I have learned and hope you will conclude as well, is that this isn’t true. What is true, and by the end of this chapter, I think you will see clearly and make your truth as well, is that there is one DIS-ease. This will begin to make sense as we continue the discussion.
The body gets out of balance from various things done or not done to it and this starts with the decisions you make. As you enter into the dis-ease process, the body begins to let you know by way of symptoms. As these symptoms arise, the wise thing to do is to listen. As you begin to listen to these symptoms, you will discover that they are messages letting you know what needs to be done to get back in balance. Once this balance, or homeostasis, is achieved, the symptoms go away, and you are in health again. A simple and common example is high blood pressure. High blood pressure is a symptom of an imbalance. When we eat foods we weren’t designed for, in this case animal products with solid fat, we gum up the works. Animal fat is solid at body temperature. The body will try to remove it but it gets layered along the artery walls. This makes the artery diameter smaller. To get enough oxygen rich blood to the organs on the other side of the blockage the blood must pump harder raising the blood pressure. If we simply stop eating animal products and eat what we were designed to eat, the body can fix the problem and lower the blood pressure.
Remember, your body is nature. It is an incredible healing machine. It has the capability and blueprint to stay in a healthy state continuously. This healthy state is natural. What we do in our modern chemical lifestyle is not natural. The body does not know how to handle the unknown unusable things we put in it except get it out or shuffle it into fat cells which are neutral ground. When the fat cells are overloaded the body begins to suffer greatly. YOU are the only one who can heal yourself. A doctor can only stitch or dress a wound. Your body does the healing. Lets support that amazing super power!
Germ Theory or Terrain?
Scientific concepts, like the germ theory, have created false beliefs that all these “diseases” come from outside of ourselves so we have to take something from the outside and put it in our bodies to fix it or stop the malfunction, as if we know better than nature and need to fix all of its “errors.” A simple example would be eating something like a pizza along with a large drink resulting in a stomach ache or indigestion. The common treatment would be to get the antacid, as if we have an antacid deficiency. This is an example of how we mask our symptoms versus finding out the root cause and applying a lasting solution. The solution here would be to stop eating the pizza, and that drink, so you don’t upset your stomach to begin with. This is called healing at the root of the problem versus “The Band-aid effect.” The way we treat our illnesses, in America, is proving to be an unsustainable practice. More people are getting sicker than ever before in history. If we would just stop putting the wrong stuff in (solution), we wouldn’t have the stomach ache to begin with and we’d have plenty of energy left over to enjoy an activity instead of recovering from the stomach ache.
A simple example of how the germ theory is not a sound belief (even Louis Pasteur admitted this on his death bed) would be in a room of people. Someone sneezes and a few people get sick. If the germ theory were true then everyone would get sick because of exposure to the germs (pathogens). The truth is, if you have a strong immune system you can fight off the germs. I will discuss this more in Core Concept 3.
The root cause analysis should be applied in every case, solutions not band-aides. Any scientific research, considered valid, must include this step. Why wouldn’t we apply the same principle to our health? A better response to the stomach ache might look like this, “Maybe I shouldn’t eat the pizza and drink that particular kind of drink? Maybe there is something off with that behavior causing my body to be overloaded?” This is much more balanced thinking and can help us stop making disease in our bodies. This is where the seven stages of disease can guide us to a remedy.
The Seven Stages of Disease
Stage 1 is Enervation. Enervation means a feeling of being drained of energy or vitality. This words’ roots are from the word energy. Your very existence is dependent upon how much energy you have at any given time. There are a multitude of actions your body needs to carry out to keep you alive and renewed. Enervation is a condition in which the body is either not generating sufficient energy to take care of everything or the tasks that must be performed are greater than the normal amount of energy can cope with. This situation leads to impairment and generates even less energy. This quickly leads to all the body’s functions becoming impaired including the process of elimination of the toxic byproducts of both metabolism and the residues of foods taken into body.
There will always be a certain amount of toxins in the body. This is totally natural and the body has systems in place to handle this low-level toxicity. The imbalance begins when there are more toxins being produced than are being eliminated. The body gets loaded down with toxins, works diligently to remove them, but only results in the further inability of the body to restore depleted energy and becoming overloaded with toxic material.
Energy is restored when we sleep. Some synonyms we have entered into this first stage of disease would be fatigue, exhaustion, tiredness, weariness, lassitude, needing naps, weakness, feebleness, or debilitation. Typically, if you do not get regular, deep healing sleep, you are in stage 1 of disease. If you find yourself complaining about how tired you are, you are in stage 1 of disease. Even eating too close to bedtime (your body has to use it’s energy to digest first leaving less time for the deep healing sleep required) and most prescription medications can disrupt your ability to fall into the deep healing sleep required to maintain homeostasis. Keep in mind that the sedentary lifestyle promotes enervation, sluggishness, and the body’s inability to remove toxins from our tissues.
A simple solution to heal and prevent moving further into the other stages is to get sleep. Studies tell us that every hour you sleep before midnight is equivalent to 2 after midnight. Our natural circadian rhythm requires getting to bed as close to sunset as possible. You CAN catch up on sleep so start NOW! Take time to allow yourself to sleep until you feel like getting up. Rearrange your schedule so that you can do that at least twice a week for a while. The other nights go for 8 hours. If you need help getting to sleep try a small amount of melatonin (0.75mg – 5.0mg). There are some research papers out there that discuss the therapeutic value of taking a 20 mg dose of Melatonin starting with 2.5mg and building up slowly over a month in 2.5mg doses. If you don’t have cancer I would not try this dose but stick with the 0.75mg – 5.0mg dosage.
If you feel like your life will come to a screeching halt if you don’t take care of “everything,” call me. I’ve been there and completely understand. I have spent the last 6 years recreating my world to support health and thriving. I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. I decided it was more important to feel good and enjoy life so I found what I love to do, slowed WAY down, and the rest fell into place. Where there is a will there is a way. What good are you if you are laid up in bed sick with cancer? Just as the airline staff directs us to put our oxygen mask on first then help others, this is the way we need to treat ourselves. I’ve noticed a trend among the cancer patients at the clinic. They are really good at giving and not good at receiving. When we are taking care of ourselves fully, we are available to help others fully.
With all of our modern “advances” in industry equating to modern conveniences, we are over-exposed to toxic levels of poisons, and if we continue to run ourselves ragged, it is more than likely we will end up with cancer. This recent statistic shows us our chances if we continue on an unhealthy path. One hundred years ago 0.5% of Americans got cancer, now 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. That’s 50% of men and 33% of women! This is serious yet common situation!
Stage 2 is Toxemia. This is a HUGE topic that I will go into more detail on through out this book, especially in Core Concept 2. Toxemia is the presence of excessive toxins that saturate the blood, lymph, and body tissues. It is also called “Toxicosis.” As I just mentioned, our world has become quite a toxic place. There is not a place in the world left that toxins have not touched. Even the Polar Bears have PCB’s in their tissues. BPA (bis-phenol A, a potent endocrine disruptor found in plastics), has been found in 93% of urine samples tested, as well as in blood and breast milk. We have to watch for toxins in everything from the air we breath, the water we drink, the food we eat, electronics emissions (EMF’s), and the list goes on. As the amount of toxins we take in increases our bodies become over burdened and cannot keep up removing them from the body. A pertinent example of this was recently brought to light in an important documentary, The Disappearing Male.
The job of the body is to maintain balance so the excess toxins must be removed. IN an attempt to correct the situation cleansing must occur to maintain its integrity. The body will initiate a flushing of the toxins and 2 results can be expected. One is the symptom (sign) of discomfort such as the feeling of coming down with a cold or flu. The second is feeling very tired because of the greater burden on the body’s energy supply to now remove the excessive toxicity. This fatigue will become even more pronounced if the person is overworking, under stress, not sleeping enough, or taking time to rest.
Think about how amazing our bodies really are. How can they keep up with all of these toxins day in and day out, year after year? The body maneuvers the things it cannot use, the best that it can, and loyally let’s you know when it can’t keep up. Like a trustworthy friend, your body works with you. The high blood pressure example, that was used earlier, is an excellent example of how amazing your body is! Your body is so amazing it will work with you to increase the blood pumping to the other side of that blockage so that you will have proper oxygenation to the organs so you live. WOW!
If we simply stop putting in the animal fat (all American animal flesh is 40-60% solid animal fat because we feed them food that fattens them too quickly with unnatural foods), then the body could clean up the mess. As a result, the arteries would open, blood pressure would drop, and all systems would run as designed. Remember this simple idea. This is another clue that lets us know what the best foods are to put into our bodies. When we put the right food in our bodies, it can run as designed.
To avoid the excess toxins we could move to less toxic parts of the world or assist the body in removing these toxins. If moving is not your idea of a solution, a more practical method is to avoid as many toxins going into the body as possible. Some things we don’t have as much control over like fluoride in the water and toxins being pumped into the air (study Geo-engineering AKA Chem-trails). Some things we do have control over like what foods and liquids we put into our body as well as what we wash our clothes in, clean our house with, and put on our hair and skin. I will go into more detail in the protocols in the appendix.
